ZOOLOGIAN

Zoologian (zoo-uh-LOW-gee-in) is an instrumental groove/jam/rock/funk/disco band formed in Aug '09. They plan to start doing live shows in Chicagoland with the hope of attracting a worldwide audience. The music is driven by bass guitar and drums, with basslines being all over the fretboard. The drums are punchy and unexpectedly bust into dance/disco sequences. Most of what you hear is bass guitar on top of more bass. The first album, entitled "Gulls," is a busy, confusing, energetic, spacey bunch of songs. Read more on Last.fm

Most of what you hear is bass guitar on top of more bass. The first album, entitled "Gulls," is a busy, confusing, energetic, spacey bunch of songs. It features Greg Rubens on Bass Guitar and effects, Chris Morrow on drums for tracks Chivalry, Beaut Cuckoo, and I'll Fill Out the Form, and Justin Lack on drums for all other tracks. It was released in Jan '10 and recorded by Elliot Bancel of Mason Street Studios and Mike Ritrosi at IndySounds.

The 2nd album, entitled "The Very Same Exact Day" will be released in fall '10 and will feature Greg Rubens on bass and keyboards and Chris Morrow on drums. It is being recorded by Elliot Bancel at Mason Street Studios. "This album will promise to be a collection of 13ish new songs with less wacky, spacy effects and more focus on some simpler overdubs of bass to start but then becoming the mayhem and confusion that my 1st album, "Gulls," spawned," said Rubens. Greg Rubens was born in the suburbs of Chicago in '76 and didn't start to translate music in his heart, soul, and brain until late in life when a few friends needed the bass in a trio.

It was not until 20 that he and others realized an unorthodox style was starting to take shape without any formal musical education or training. He plays everything by sight, feel, ear, memorization, and improvisation. There were a few bands Rubens played in from 1999-2003 which played some originals and covers, but in 2003 Greg split from the scene and just about isolated himself from the outside world in a 495 sq ft apartment for a Summer to create what will become 4+ albums worth of material in the next few years.
