Year of October was formed in Lexington, Kentucky. Originally a duet that included Josh Sullivan and Phlecia Ellington. On a trip to Myrtle Beach for spring break the couple teamed up with good friend Nathan Smith and recorded a song in their hotel room. When they returned to Lexington they began playing music together more regularly, and have recorded several songs in Nathan's apartment or Josh's parent's basement. When they returned to Lexington they began playing music together more regularly, and have recorded several songs in Nathan's apartment or Josh's parent's basement.

They later recruited the help of guitarist and singer Sam Jones and drummer Dion Sanders. The band's music is very diverse and ranges from bluesy soul, to lighter folk songs. They also like to play that rock and or roll music, as Nathan Smith would say.
