Members of the band were classically-trained and influenced by jazz and rock music, making for a highly creative integration of sounds and styles. Winter Equinox utilized a wide variety of instruments such as keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, percussion, flute, clarinet, melodica, and programmed rhythms to define their sound. The band took influences from artists such as Tortoise, Do Make Say Think, Mogwai, Caribou, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, the Notwist, M83, and Boards of Canada. Since their formation in May 2004, Winter Equinox had established themselves within many cities in Ontario before disbanding in February 2006. Notably, the band was invited to perform at Wavelength Magazine's Music Series while being featured within their monthly issue. They have also played alongside such acts as Caribou, Holy Fuck, The Organ and Matt Pond PA.
Winter Equinox completed their debut album Safe and Sound with Crony Records in August 2005. The release of their CD was accompanied by a tour of Ontario, Quebec, and eastern Canadian provinces.
