Wendy Leung

Wendy Leung grew up with classical music in her brain and fingers, and pop in her ears and heart. Her first albums cultivated a certain darkness that was inherent in her songwriting. Raw and soul-bearing, A Place to Start (2000) and This Time (2003) showcased a lamenting girl on piano and a lamenting young woman (now with musical friends), respectively. Stop/Start (2008) was a turning point.

Recorded at Toronto studio Chemical Sound with the support of her live band, it included toys and trinkets, sights and sounds, borrowed from the backyards of her indie-rock neighbours. Though expansive, catchy, warm and affecting, to Wendy’s ear there was something missing. That tugging at her sleeve persisted, and soon it was time to take action. The fall of 2009 spawned a sonic revolution: voice, keys, guitar, bass, drums, more drums, and...drum machines. THIS was what the songs were meant to be! Seamlessly juxtaposing organic and machine, the new Wendy Leung lives somewhere between deep ocean and outer space.

The songs are still moving. Only now, with this hard return to pop, they’ll also make you move your feet. There’s an energy about it all. The chatters, the shimmers, the vibrant countermelodies — an excitement of bursts and wonders. The driving force remains Wendy’s voice and songs.

But now Wendy Leung is not just one person — it’s an entire band. Listen. This is the music that will infect your soul and light you on fire! Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply..
