Continuing his studies through Middle and High Schools, he learned Classical and Jazz trumpet simultaneously He studied trumpet privately with local musicians Marc Klose and John Maguda. Vince explored other school ensembles, All County invitationals, and Area All State festivals excelling in both genres. Outside school he joined local bands ranging from March and Symphonic works to Jazz and Pop arrangements. After graduating from Silver Creek Central High School June 2007, Vince relocated across New York state to attend college at SUNY New Paltz. Studying modern Jazz techniques privately with Rebecca Coupe Franks, Vince enrolled majoring in Music, concentrating on Jazz Study through the trumpet.
At college, he began branching out into composing and arranging, later prompting him to add Theory & Composition as a second concentration. Vince's early compositions reflect the concept albums which characterized Classic Rock music of the late 1960's into the 1970's. He focused on working out a plot while using instrumental music as expression. Attending theory classes and diving deeper into Jazz as an art-form, Vince shifted his compositional output from the concept album (he calls them his early suites) format to straight ahead Jazz charts. He was now playing with multiple Jazz groups of multi-styled musical orientation occasionally writing music specifically tailored to the players of those groups.
Vince's music challenges his peers as well as pushes his own limitations on the trumpet. In his teenage years, Vince dabbled in guitar and bass thus purchasing sophisticated modern effects processors and devices. With much of his efforts shifting back to trumpet as his primary instrument, Vince set out to adapt his guitar effects for use in conjunction with the trumpet with striking results. This form of sonic experimentation allowed him to explore new genres based around Jazz, but disguised as Rock Fusion. With is ever growing "electric rig" Vince found himself sought after by jam, funk, and psychedelic outfits to highlight a few.
Quatrane provides the main stage for Vince to frequent his "electric rig" as on their more experimental shows. Vince continued to study Music Theory & Composition with modern composer John B Hedges. Working with Hedges has opened and liberated Vince's creativity and sense of available palate. Vince gained tighter grip over techniques such as line, counterpoint, and color with a gradual approach to composition beginning with small, simple pieces to large, complex works. Between the months of May and December 2010 Vince wrote and orchestrated a five movement piece for Contemporary Orchestra titled "Strati atmosferici".
The music captures the essence of each layer of Earth's atmosphere. He continues to write and arrange in Classical and Jazz streams. Vince utilizes his arranging techniques towards contemporary music and reviving the Great American Songbook, additionally with his own new music. A long journey from his small home town, Vince Tampio most recently completed his final year at SUNY New Paltz, pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Music at the State University of New Paltz. He is concentrated in Jazz Study and Theory & Composition.
