Vehicle Derek

Well, kids, if you were there, you'd know, but as you probably weren't, Vehicle Derek were the epitome of late '80's enthusiastic provincial hardcore punk. Well, kids, if you were there, you'd know, but as you probably weren't, Vehicle Derek were the epitome of late '80's enthusiastic provincial hardcore punk. Formed in Boston, Lincolnshire in 1988, they not only played their way out of the tedium of a small town, but they even survived into the 90's and cut a record. Those who were there at the time remember hot, excited, gigs, running at 2000mph, blowing away dried up old goths, sad old metallers and oxfam socialist indie janglers and delivering the kind of stuff you ended up wondering if you had actually seen. The end result for Vehicle Derek was the fate of all decent bands - the split.

Musical differences, university, a fruit and veg round, travelling, and plain old inertia finished them off sometime in the early 90's. Once the hooded tops got hung up, the Converse soon wore out and before you knew it they were out of each others lives. Some went north, some went south, some became geography teachers. Life's rough like that.

All that remained were a few tapes, photos, and dusty memories. But in the rickety minds of everyone who witnessed it, somewhere out there is a long forgotten fenland garage filled with borrowed amplifiers and cheap instruments, shaking away on a Sunday afternoon to new songs, old songs and ambitious but bad Hüsker Dü covers. After an accidental reunion gig in 1997, the band laid dormant for a couple more years, until in the spring of 2000 a chance email got them back together. Web searches found two lost members, practices were held and lo, there was rock, and rock aplenty.

A fistful of gigs from Margate to Nottingham and back, and a couple of CDs and then by late 2002 it was all gone again. For half the band the reignition of that youthful yearning to "want to be in a band" was too much. They became Benny- (search 'em on here- they have a page somewhere)- when the guitarist left for the States, the remainder became Jackshit (again kids- they have a myspace page here ya know). - Vehicle Derek Myspace Page http://www.myspace.com/vehiclederek Read more on Last.fm.
