The Granola People

…the granola people have been writing, recording, and performing their brand of acoustic-guitar based, harmony-driven new-folk music since 1993. During this time members Andrew Muncaster (voice, guitar) and Frank Deresti (voice, guitar, banjo, etc.) have developed a distinctive style of folk music that is difficult to categorize, but easy to appreciate. A typical granola people show may incorporate elements of folk, country, bluegrass, jazz, funk, gospel, and whatever else happens to be floating around in the collective headspace of the duo. Rooted in tradition, but always with eyes open for new possibilities or variations on a theme, their sound is ever-evolving but always distinguishable.

As a duo or with an ever-changing cast of additional members the granola people have performed hundreds of shows over the past decade-plus, including appearances at the North-by-Northeast Conference in Toronto; live on CBC Radio and City TV; as an opening act for a veritable who's who of better-known acts; and at festivals, bars, pubs, theatres, and coffee-houses. The focus has always been on creating and performing original music, and to that end the granola people have released 4 albums to date. The last two CDs: “Down the Road” – recorded with singer Dennis Posno in 1996 and “Blair” released in 2004, have received airplay on CBC radio and various college radio stations. A fifth album is currently in the works, and scheduled for release early in 2007.

Recently the granola people have been performing both as a duo and in a full-band format with seasoned veterans of the stage Lindsay Pugh (bass) and Cliff Alloy (percussion). They are also regularly joined by Sheldon Jaaskelainen (fiddle, additional harmonies). Aside from performing, Andrew and Frank are both employed at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, where Andrew teaches in the History/Philosophy Department and Frank is the Co-ordinator of Jazz Studies and lectures in the Departments of Music and Fine Arts.
