The Flemish Primitives

The Flemish Primitives is not a band per se, but rather the nom de musique (since neither “plume” nor “guerre seemed quite appropriate) of yet another anonymous boy recording songs by himself in his apartment with such materials as come readily to hand (violin, cheap guitar, effects box and practice amp, little toy keyboard, and a laptop equipped with such noise-producing programs as can be easily found for free on the internet). The name is by no means meant to imply any sort of connection with Belgium or the Flemish people (said boy resides rather in a mid-size city near the middle of the North American continent), but is rather a reference to a particularly favored style of painting, taken in the manner of such much-admired and occasionally solitary “bands” as the Mountain Goats and the Magnetic Fields (and in any case, the use of the plural in the name seems to him no more arbitrary or artificial a conceit than his writing this self-description in the third person). It should probably be mentioned that, while this oft-aforementioned boy is responsible for all of the sounds present, none of the words are original, but have rather been lifted (or, if you prefer a more highbrow terminology, “set”) kunstlied-style from the sort of poems he thought would make good song lyrics (Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Gerard de Nerval, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and Stephen Crane are among those stolen from as of this writing). While he is a bit nervous about listing “influences” or points of comparison, he did once hear these songs described as “sounding like a cross between the Velvet Underground and Neutral Milk Hotel”, which, though a bit unduly flattering, did please him to no end, and seemed as good a sound to aspire to as any.
