The Cudgels

Buzzcocks or Manics without the angst, Undertones but more fun and Steve Nieve-esque keyboards! Welcome to the wonderful world of The Cudgels, my friend. A mid 80's indie band who might make you get up and dance, but will definitely make you sit up and think! Buzzcocks or Manics without the angst, Undertones but more fun and Steve Nieve-esque keyboards! Welcome to the wonderful world of The Cudgels, my friend. A mid 80's indie band who might make you get up and dance, but will definitely make you sit up and think! Formed in Coronation Road, Great Barr by brothers Andrew and Stephen Davies with cousin Noel a steadying factor, the life of the band can best be described as tragically short, but ultimately their songs remain timeless snapshots of growing up in the Midlands, discovering sexuality, friends/foes, too many nights out and just having a blast! Band members came and went but Andrew's leadership, musical talent and ability to tell a damned good story in a song are what shines through on these tracks . Tracy Eastwood, who has a strong voice (backing on Sign on the Door or Friday is testament to that) uses much softer tones when she takes lead vox on Summer Colours, Caroline Poet and Driftwood Sands. Her vocals dreamily caress the listener, a la Tracey Thorn in her Marine Girls days, and evoke memories of long past teenage seaside holidays. The single Joybang! is a belter of a pop tune - it feels like all your mates crashing through your front door at the same time! Big Pink sees Davies at his songwriting best. He will have you trying to second guess his double meanings and double entendres in the style of Tim Freeman (Frazier Chorus) in his heyday. In a perfect world The Cudgels should have had 5 Top Ten Singles and a deal which would have seen a much wider audience appreciate their joys and ironies.

Sadly, and astoundingly, only Sunday Records of Illinois USA took them on board Shame on you, EMI. Shame on you, Island Records. Shame on you, A&M. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply..
