The Chrome Robes came together in early 2006 over a steel plant in Chicago’s Kinzie Industrial Corridor. Taking cues from their isolated location, the three Robes tempered their individual histories making technically involved yet accessible music with a passion for noise and volume. The continuing result pulls from the best of 90s indie rock, stripping it of nostalgia while leaving all of its immediacy. The Chrome Robe’s uniquely located practice space is emblematic of their ethos; a dirty, sprawling room crammed with electric, bass, and baritone guitars, sturdy, vintage tube amplification, a full compliment of recording gear, and drums.

All the equipment has seen their hands, adjusted for tones that reflect the dynamism of Ben Myers’ drums, the elliptical strangeness of Matt Lentz’s lyrics, and the inventiveness of Scott Usdrowski’s melodic interpretations. In these confines, they recorded a self released ep in 2007 and another in 2008 for Roydale Records. Live, The Chrome Robes have covered hard ground across Chicago, already playing clubs like Subterranean and the Empty Bottle with a host of bands that include Bellini, fFlashlights, and .22. Drawing on a cumulative forty years plus experience of playing out, The Chrome Robes strip current indie conventions of their penchant for costumes and makeup, relying instead on the direct, genuine sincerity of three good-looking guys playing loud music in dark clubs late at night.
