Under the nominal leadership of tenor and soprano saxophonist Craig Handy, this group achieved a measure of distinction owing to a small number of well-conceived and implemented albums. The first, 1995’s Chartbusters! Volume 1, was an engaging homage to Blue Note Records but because it appeared only on a small independent label its qualities were heard by only a few.

The follow-up set also paid tribute to a record company, or rather its roster of recording artists; this time it was Prestige Records, who also released the album. Other members of the band include Donald Harrison, Lonnie Smith, and Idris Muhammad with the added horn of Randy Brecker and David Fiuczynski’s guitar on Mating Call. Read more on Last.fm.
