The (Australian) Playboys were the incarnation of Australian beat group, The Playboys, that released the 1967 single, Sad. This was, in fact, the only single credited to The (Australian) Playboys. The Playboys started as a beat group in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1962, they teamed up with Melbourne-based rising star, Normie Rowe. The Playboys started as a beat group in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1962, they teamed up with Melbourne-based rising star, Normie Rowe. By 1964 Rowe and The Playboys were well on their way of becoming Australia's biggest pop stars.

In 1965 and 1966 Rowe and The Playboys racked up a steady tally of hits and in late 1966, after some line-up changes, they made a pilgrimage to England in the hopes of expanding their fan base. Despite some heavy PR and several quality releases, Rowe's career failed to take off in the U.K. However, The Playboys used the extended stay to their advantage, absorbing the sounds of the rapidly evolving English scene and taking some British players on board, including Mick Rogers and Terry Griffin. Unfortunately, this hybrid Aussie-Brit line-up only recorded one single, the aforementioned Sad, which was included on the prestigious compilation box set, Nuggets II. Read more on Last.fm.
