Territory Band

The Territory Band is Avant-Garde Jazz musician Ken Vandermark's large ensemble vehicle (outside of occasionally writing for the Tentet), and surely a group unifying what he's learned from a wide array of projects and influences. In name, it signifies the international nature of the contemporary improvisation climate. The Territory Band combines Vandermark's loyal cadre of Chicago musicians with his frequent collaborators from Europe — Norway, Sweden, Germany and England. The lineup has changed slightly over the years. The first version of the Territory Band was based on the concept of pairs: 2 brass : Jeb Bishop (US) and Axel Doerner (D), 2 woodwinds : Dave Rempis (US) and the leader, 2 strings : Kent Kessler (US) and Fred Lonberg-Holm (US), 2 percussion : Paul Lytton (UK) and Tim Mulvenna (US), with Jim Baker (US) being added on piano. The Following year the unit was expanded to twelve with Per-Ake Holmlander (SE) - tuba and Fredrik Ljungkvist (SE) - reeds.

Hearing the possibilities inherent in a fuller range of brass and reeds Vandermark also decided to broaden the sound pallet to include the electronic work of Kevin Drumm (US), making the new version of the band one of the few large electro-acoustic improvising ensembles. Later the norwegian percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love will replace Tim Mulvenna and the electronic work will be made by Lasse Marhaug, other norwegian musician. The Territory Band has made six recordings : 1 : Transatlantic Bridge - 2001 2 : Atlas - 2002 3 : Map Theory (2CD) - 2004 4 : Company Switch (2CD) - 2005 5 : New Horse For The White House (3CD) - 2006 6 : Collide, with Fred Anderson - 2008 All these recordings were released for Okka Disk. Over the course of the five years of work with the group, Vandermark has tried to develop an electro-acoustic aesthetic that would be able to incorporate a broad range of ideas about composition and improvisation. Sources of inspiration have been derived from the history of improvised music established in the United States and Western Europe, and from strategies traceable to late 20th century composition. In addition, the architecture of the music has been directly affected by other areas of creative action- painting, film, photography, poetry, and dance. Vandermark has tried to design compositional frameworks that liberate and motivate the improvisers in the TERRITORY BAND rather than confine them through a rigid set of directives and overly complex material.

It is also important to note that the predetermined components have been organized with this specific set of musicians in mind, no other group of individuals could perform th with anywhere near the same results. By freeing the improvisers to realize the music implied by the compositions, Vandermark has created an ensemble that is a combination of twelve distinct aesthetics set in motion by a common goal.
