Starting Last

In the summer of 2001 Barthlomew Sciacca and Jordan Carfagno got together to conceive a musical lovechild. Unbeknownst to them, the musical journey they were about to embark on would carry them through the better part of a decade. Starting with nothing but hand-me-down equipment and a basement in Queens, they composed songs for their own enjoyment. Taking life experiences and molding them into tongue-in-cheek, humor based songs that everyone could relate to, they started off having fun and made it a point to keep doing so. Read more on Last.fm

Then began the hunt began for new musicians. A year or two later they approached mutual friend John DiGregorio to join in on their musical journey. At this point they began taking themselves 32% more seriously, and really gave their songs an edge. This gave them the motivation and inspiration that would push them to go farther.

At first it was just three friends jamming in a basement sans drums. However, they wanted to take the next logical step and complete the band. Unfortunately that wasn't in the cards. For a short period of time John dropped playing guitar and began to play the drums.

This was the beginning of what would become Starting Last; their name originating from their ascent from nothing. Starting Last then became a complete band. Not a very good band mind you, but a band nonetheless. After working at their music for a while and playing in venues in the dwindling Queens music scene, the band went on hiatus.

John moved to Florida, Jordan interned in France, and it seemed like it was the end. Upon Jordan’s return from France, he and Bart realized that the burning passion in their loins to create music for the masses had not been extinguished. A phone call and a visit from John influenced his return to New York and to the band. While John was preparing to move back and resume guitar duty, Bart and Jordan met drummer Eddy Cruz, hailing from Manta, Ecuador.

After his audition, it was apparent that this was a good fit musically, spiritually, and emotionally. Together, the four of them bonded and created the music they liked. However, they were still in dire need of a lead singer/front man. After endless tryouts and entries, Jordan came across a phone call from a Long Island kid named Justin Parish, who had the guts and heart to try out over the phone.

Jordan had heard enough after nine seconds, and set up an official tryout with the band. It went off without a hitch. Justin was the last piece of the puzzle that would complete Starting Last. Bart, Jordan, and John made up the foundation of the band, but it was Justin and Eddy who brought the enthusiasm that gave Starting Last its final motivation.

Starting Last has been described as “a band that sounds like a great mixture of all the pop-punk music today.” They’re influenced by Blink 182, Alkaline Trio, Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard, Dashboard Confessional and many others. Over the past years they’ve played all over New York City and Long Island. They’ve done it all -- from charity events to house parties. During the summer of 2008 they recorded five of their first songs and released them as their demo.

Starting Last has earned the number one spot for both the pop/punk and emo unsigned band charts in New York, and has expanded their fan base nationally. They were even featured in an article in the New York Times! And this is only the beginning… Read more on Last.fm.
