Intentions are important to the Derry foursome. "The main intention we had was to make better music than we had been hearing locally. The other intention was the time honoured tradition of live fast die young and leave a good looking corpse. We had a short lived plan for world domination.
This lasted as long as the time it took us to realise every band says that. We will settle for domination of a small village or housing estate." The band has been going since late '05. The drums are played by Cor who batters the skins as if his life depends on it. Sometimes it does.
The guitar duties are shared by Gary and Brent. In between breaking strings and amps, things work. Migs plays bass. He also thinks he can sing, so they let him have a mic that is never turned on.
Brent sings. Occasionally he screams, grunts and moans, but mostly complains. Questions about his lyrics have been known to end in violence. Cor occasionally tries some backing vocals.
Influences is a tricky subject, as each member of The Union has their own: Brent - Pixies, Les Savy Fav and Fugazi. Gary - Beatles and Rory Gallagher. Cor - Biffy Clyro, Bloc party and Graham Coxon. Migs - Radiohead, Interpol and Muse.
As far as the music goes, put all the influences listed above and blend them into a nutritious smoothie type substance and this is what they sound like. They manage to combine the menial pay of the rent jobs with spending time in a farm shed making the best music they possibly can. They write only original material. It is their humble opinion that there is nothing worse than a cover band, except of course, a really bad cover band.
2; Sleepers Union is a New Zealand band lead by punk front man Simon McLaren.
