Lauded by the music weeklies as a Scott Walker for the late-90s, with his chocolate chip vocals and sleazy tales of lacivious landladies and jobsworth public transport officials, Simon Warner in fact straddled the fag end of Britpop (he also smoked like a trooper on stage) with the emergence of the 21st century's acoustic troubadors. If Julian Cope had met Nick Cave at Bedford Esquires in 1979 they would've mutated into a symbiotic being like Simon Warner; or Gilbert and George with a crimping iron and string section. A deal with One Little Indian Records (home of Bjork) helped to elevate his cult status but did little for record sales but for me he'll be fondly remembered for getting the word "custard" on to a single.
