The band consists of Andrew Pettitt (vocals, guitar), Ulrika Bjorsne (vocals, guitar) and David Farrell (samples, decks). They formed in 2003 in London, though Ulrika Bjorsne is originally from Alstermo in southern Sweden. They have toured with Goldfrapp, Rilo Kiley and Gnarls Barkley. Danger Mouse, hip-hop producer and one half of Gnarls Barkley, has described the band as his favourite contemporary group. The Debt Collection is the debut album which consists of 12 tracks. The music has been described as 'Victorian Funk'.This was released in 2005. The band are recording their second LP, provisionally entitled Replica Sun Machine, in Los Angeles.

The album features production from Danger Mouse, string arrangements and orchestrations by Beach Boys collaborator Van Dyke Parks, and further contributions by John Cale of The Velvet Underground. Replica Sun Machine is expected to be released early in 2008. In addition to releasing their own material, The Shortwave Set have provided remixes for Goldfrapp, Moby and Scissor Sisters.
