Joseph Emmanuel Serge Lebrasse, better known as Serge Lebrasse was born on the 25th June 1930 in the town of Rose Hill in Mauritius. He attended school until the age of 14 when all schools on the island closed due to a polio outbreak. Instead of staying at home, he took up a job as an apprentice woodsman in Quartier Militaire where he met Jean Alphonse Ravaton (known as Ti Frère) who introduced him to traditional Sega. He pursued his music while working as a primary school music teacher for 17 years and is widely recognised as having made Sega the national music of Mauritius.

In earlier years, Sega was considered vulgar and was only enjoyed in rural areas. Serge Lebrasse was awarded an M.B.E. in 1975 for services to local folklore. Serge Lebrasse also served in the British Army in Egypt for three years during World War II. Read more on Last.fm.
