In 1988 he started his work at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre and since 1993 he is the head of the percussion section of the symphony orchestra of the theatre. A teacher of the percussion class at B.Dvarionas Music School. S. Auglys studied the art of marimba with the marimba player Linda Maxey from the USA.
S. Auglys plays Adams marimba. During his studies at the Vilnius J. Tallat – Kelpsha Conservatory, in 1987 S. Auglys won the first prize in the competition of young performers in Lithuania.
In 1999 S. Auglys together with the accordionist Sandra Kleizaite won the second prize in the competition of mixed duets. S. Auglys is the organizer as well as the participant of the international percussion festivals in Lithuania. S.
Auglys is often invited to assist other Lithuanian symphony orchestras such as the Lithuanian State and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestras. In 1990 he played with the World Youth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of a famous conductor Eduardo Mata. Saulius performs in different kinds of bands. Together with Tomas Kulikauskas he founded a percussion duet “Taba duo” and “Taba percussion” ensemble.
He also plays in the duets with the pianists Gytis Cinauskas and Daumantas Slipkus who are his accompanists. Quite a few pieces performed by Saulius are recorded at the Lithuanian Radio. Striving to popularize percussion instruments, S. Auglys gives a lot of concerts in Lithuania, arranges pieces for the percussion instruments and writes his own pieces of music. According to the author, his best works are: Quartet for snare drums (1999) and Concerto for marimba and symphony orchestra (2003). S.
Auglys’ repertory includes works by many different composers, of various styles and genres. He pays particular attention to the modern music. The grand concerts performed by Saulius are: at the Minsk National Philharmonic together with the percussion ensemble “Classic Avangard” and at the Vilnius Town Hall together with the Vilnius Percussion Ensemble (1998); in 2000 S. Auglys performed Ney Rosauro’s Concerto for marimba during the Lithuanian Grand Musicians’ Parade at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic with the LMA Percussion Ensemble and in Klaipeda with the Klaipeda Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Robertas Shervenikas; in 1999 he performed Paul Creston’s Concerto for marimba and orchestra at the International Percussion Festival in Lithuania together with the symphony orchestra of the Lithuanian Music Academy conducted by Robertas Shervenikas; in 2000 Saulius performed N.J.Zivkovic Concerto Nr.
1 for marimba and symphony orchestra and concerto “Univiem Souls” for marimba and percussion ensemble at the International Percussion Festival; in 2000 he performed V.Germanavichius Concerto for violin, violoncello and marimba at the Gaida festival; in 2001 Saulius performed L.Stanchikas Concerto for marimba and symphony orchestra together with St.Christopher Chamber Orchestra conducted by Donatas Katkus. This first CD is recorded in 2000 Duglas De Morrow marimba, N.J.Zivkovic “Ultimatum”-marimba Yamaha 4900. The next CD “Four Stick Joke” is planned to be recorded in 2004. Read more on Last.fm.
