We’re back in 2001 when good music is thin on the ground, boy and girl bands dominate and purists crap in their pants for fear of the end of the music world as we know it. Times were different, but the positive side was the ground swell of creativity during these barren years which made it an interesting time to be in Paris. The emerging French scene, influential DJs and producers playing in various venues; clubs converting their scenes to electro and many new openings are created for aspiring DJs and producers like Tijnar & freeBase: a couple of foreign lads now in a strange land doing their utmost to balance their day jobs, learning French and DJing all at the same time. The two meet when they are double booked for a set, at a time when electro-punk takes off first on the Paris scene.

They share a few ideas about the future of music whilst alternating on the decks and kicking back some beers and vodkas. The success of the night leads them to go on to perform a few club gigs together at venues such as WAGG, Divan du Monde and Nirvana Lounge as well as various other Parisian bars, but they both know the ultimate contribution they can give to the world is creating their own style of music. The Sao Paulo Punks are thus formed, a first few tunes created with the taste of nu-disco, catchy loops, synth hooks and a touch of funk-flavoured French influence over a 4-4 beat with sporadic vocals. The Punks continue producing and playing, evolving their sets towards a more eclectic and varied style to reflect their diverse influences: Tijnar grew up playing the guitar and keyboards where rockers ruled and freeBase’s teenage years are a hazy blur of hip-hop and house.

The result is a fusion of the cherries picked from a plethora of styles to create music with an original, uplifting vibe. Tijnar and freeBase have been around the block from A to Z from Amsterdam to London to Toronto to Zürich; soaking up the differences, feeling what makes people buzz and what can transform someone’s night out…Now after a few years of both producers working on solo projects, the Punks are back with passion, creativity and above all a vision to share their vibes with the people.. Tijnar is the production guru and Matt C does most of the vocals whilst dropping a hand in the beats machine. The duo is based in Paris where a thriving musical scene, crazy nights out and funky, colourful people are the backdrop to the timefunk tunnel studio where tunes are knocked out. www.saopaulopunks.com Read more on Last.fm.
