Sandy Hill Steel Band

The initial idea to begin a steel band in St. Patrick's Grammar School began in 1997. The objective was to create a musical group, which would motivate and encourage student with no formal musical background to come together and make music. The band came to fruition in 1998, when as part of the school's Art Week programme, Terry Noel from the BT Melodian Steel Orchestra came to Armagh and led a series of workshops, playing to our Year 8 and Year 9 pupils. The students from the Caribana Steel Band of Coleraine College came to assist Terry and from this a musical partnership was formed which continues today. The original band consisted of fourteen students.

It was given the name of the 'Sandy Hill Steel Band', as this is the name of the hill on which St. Patrick's Grammar School is situated. The first few months of the band's existence were perhaps the hardest, as we struggled to learn the layout of the drums and put together a fairly easy programme. The students involved were hard-working and totally comitted, rehearsing every morning before school, at breaktime, lunchtime and after school. In 2000, the Sandy Hill Steel Band travelled to Barbados with the Caribana band of Coleraine College to compete in the 'Pan in Paradise' competition. The band have since played at copious gigs and events, both regional and national, as their reputation became known. In 2004, the band travelled accross the globe once more, this time to the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago to experience the world-famous carnival. This was also one of the last major events that the band comprising of 4 original members played at.

No original members remain today having left St. Patrick's Grammar School that same year. Since it was formed in 1997 the band has continued to grow and evolve. Practices are still held at breaktime and after school and they are as commited as ever. Read more on Last.fm.
