Sam mean lil mama Payne
Her dad took her to Newport Folk Club and where she heard ‘THE ENTERTAINER’. Two months later she went round to a neighbour and picked it out on their piano. The neighbour gave her the piano Sam got the blues and by the age of 15 was playing alongside LUCKY LOPEZ EVANS and BUDDY GUY at Burnley Blues Festival SAM08EARLYDAYS2As soon as she could drive legally she hit the road doing rough dives, blues clubs, jazz clubs, and singer/songwriter venues. Somewhat thwarted by her choice of boyfriends, Sam had quite a reputation in the midlands. Music has been Sam’s saving grace. She lived in a tent for a year fruit picking with gipsies and migrant workers which was an experience.
They advised her to get to her music after hearing her on her Irish Pipes and told her “why are you wasting your time picking strawberries”! At 21 she really focussed on her music seriously. Sam believes if it wasn’t for her love of music she would be dead by now! At that time her dad sort of managed her and between them they had Sam out gigging 280 gigs a year, yes that’s about 4 or 5 gigs every week!! She held a residency at the BLACK BOY, Bewdley where local musicians like Robert Plant, Mike Sanchez would come and jam. There was an incident where the landlord chased Sam down the road waving an axe! She then got a residency at RONNIE SCOTT’s, BIRMINGHAM with Charlie Reynolds, Sax and Dayne, bass. playing Sam’s music SAMCARNIVAL Sam went to live in Brazil at the age of 18 with her grandfather.
There she jammed with percussionists, violinists, guitarists at OXFAMS centre for music in OLINDA, BAHIA. Here she developed a taste for SAMBA and MARACATU and encompasses some of those rhythms in her work. Later she studied Samba at Leeds College of Music. Sam moved to Leeds and worked alongside Mark Cresswell, Tinita Tikarams guitarist for a while, with Dave Bowie, double bass, Sam Paisley, drums and Andy Cummings, percussion Then fronted SAM’S UFORIA with Rob Durbin, guitar, Andy Marshall, drums, Richard Hammond, bass playing gigs like BAND ON THE WALL, Manchester, The Spitz, London and various UK festivals Then SKIP MACDONALD aka LITTLE AXE( OHIO, USA) came along and revolutionised everything!! Sam worked with Skip for several years producing demo’s, albums, doing sessions and gigs like support for Herbie Hancock and Bath Fringe Festival along with sessions on BBC RADIO 2. They have produced 3 albums and are due to tour again. She also began vocal and piano training and regularly goes for lessons. Sam has a distinction in the top Jazz grade on piano has the top Classical grade.
She studied vocals under many good teachers learning different techniques and styles from all of them. A 3 year residency at the Living Room in Leeds helped fund 3 solo albums. FLY, SHADES OF BLUE and HARD DRIVING. Sam reckons she's written more than 400 songs and only recorded 70 of them, so there's work to do when finances permit. As a solo artist, able to perform a wide range of songs, plus her own material, Sam is still out there gigging regularly and selling her CD’s and now her business is growing all over the world. She got No 3 in the JAZZ CHARTS for American Idol Underground. Sam is also a session singer/ keyboardist and writes lyrics for artistes and labels such as SALT SHAKER (USA), GROOVE TECHNICIANS (UK) ,see VIDEO’S.
She is very excited about a new project with GROOVE TECHNICIANS (Scott Lees). He is an amazing producer and knows technology very well. They are co-writing Soulful House and other styles. They have worked with young singers as a writing/production team and Sam can vocal coach singers to their best potentiol. They have several deals in the USA and have many more in the pipeline all around the globe.
