His music tends to have dark undertones with common themes of sadness, pain, destruction, and death. Though not all of his works contain these themes, even lighthearted pieces tend to have hints of these themes. Melnick has many influences that affect his compositions. He is a reform Jew and has been exposed to many Jewish and Yiddush folk songs and prayers which are often very melancholy, even when celebratory. Personal struggles have also contributed to Melnick's works.
This is most evident in his choral work "Shadows" which was written as a reflection of the struggles of coming out as a gay teen. What Melnick considers to be his largest influence are the people in his life.
