Robert de Montesquiou (1855-1921) was a French Symbolist poet, aesthete, art collector, essayist, writer, biographer, painter, socialite and dandy. His best known book of poetry is Les Chauves-souris. He is mostly remembered for being the inspiration for the characters Des Esseintes and the Baron de Charlus in Huysman's À rebours and Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu, respectively, and he is immortalized in portraits by Whistler and Boldini. Musically, he was inspired by composers such as Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner and Debussy. He collaborated with the composer Gabriel Fauré, writing the choral lyrics for Fauré's Pavane.
