In Glasgow he met Alex Kapranos. Then, he had been given a bass guitar by Alex, who had got it from his friend Mick Cooke, a member of the cult Glaswegian indie-popsters, Belle & Sebastian on the condition that he "did something useful with it". Then, some time around the end of 2001, Bob was sitting in Alex's kitchen.

Alex asked - "Do you want to learn to play the bass then, Bob?" "No, I'm an artist, not a musician." "It's the same thing." "Okey then". So, Robert Hardy learned to play the bass and joined Franz Ferdinand. He also learned how to play maracas for live performances of the band's song Outsiders.
