Retórica were an experimental band from the city of Belo Horizonte in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Retórica were an experimental band from the city of Belo Horizonte in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The band lived together and recorded their only album "1º Comunique" (Cisma, 2002) in their house, integrating the building's architecture in the recording process: bass was played in a bathroom, vocals for one song were recorded on the roof, and two drummers would play in one room while the microphone recording them circumvented the building. Retórica's album is a 45-minute fugue that zig-zags from lo-fi noise through epic mid-tempo songs interwoven with spoken soundbites, and all of these elements recur in an overlapping crescendo at a point near the disc's conclusion. Retórica's live shows were laced with performance art, and some concerts were practically devoid of music altogether.

Musically, Retórica were influenced by a good deal of North American post-punk and post-rock (one of their members hailed from Massachusetts); philosophically the group drew ideas from punk's do-it-yourself ethos, contemporary anarchism, and the writings of the Crimethinc ex-workers collective. Retórica had their own collective (Coletivo Cisma) which boasted a record label, publishing house, performance space, and hosted an annual festival called Carnaval Revolução that featured bands, workshops, theater performances and public manifestations of direct action around the city.
