He began to embrace the new ideas and opportunities presented to him, and in 1992 he left a gang that he had been heavily involved in. He improved his grades, studied martial arts under Sifu Hugo Rojas, and in 1996 received two great rewards for his hard work; his black belt in Chinese Kenpo and his high school diploma. RedCloud was the first in his family to receive either. In RedCloud’s freshman year of high school he came to realize that life that his family and friends had chosen for themselves was not the life he wanted. He was “jumped out” of a gang that had long been the center of his life.
After this brutal five minute “jumping out,” RedCloud lost all sense of security, friends, and family. At this point in life, RedCloud focused his time and energy on school, martial arts, and hip hop. By the age of 17, RedCloud had honed his freestyle and battle rap skills to a level high enough to beat well respected competitors. In the next few years RedCloud made his mark and became a local favorite at elite hip hop clubs in the Los Angeles underground scene such as Elements, Foundations/Functions, and Project Blowed.
