The name Plethyn is meant to convey the notion of three harmonic voices blending together to form one sound, like the three strands in a plait. Having started with local performances, the group extended their territory to cover the whole of Wales. From initial appearances on Welsh television, and playing at a festival in Brittany, they released Blas Y Pridd, which combined traditional and contemporary folk songs. They performed at the National Eisteddfod during the same year.
The trio performed "Can I Cymru" ("Song For Wales"), at the Pan Celtic Festival, in Killarney, Eire, in 1980, and two years later toured Sardinia. Caneuon Gwerin I Blant was an album of traditional children's songs. In 1985, the group toured California, USA, and in 1990, Vancouver, Canada.
