Paraffin Section recorded a self-titled 5 song EP with their trusted friend Rick behind the console in 2002. The album featured four tracks from the sessions and a live version of Into the Sun recorded at their first show. An outtake from the sessions called Reminds of Memories and Feelings found its way onto the So Lo-fi, It's No-fi Records Polar Coordination comp. The band often improvised at practice in an effort to come up with new material.
These improvisations were usually recorded and the best were compiled into an unofficial collection appropriately titled Improvisations. The band also recorded several demos of newer material (several taken from performance on WUML's Live from the Fallout Shelter) but fully realized versions do not exist. After going on hiatus in 2005, Paraffin Section reunited in October 2007. At this time the band made the decision to only perform improvised music influenced by the "instant compositions" of Can and Damo Suzuki.
This music can be completely free or contain a variety of parameters and restrictions to shape the music. Ethan has added several non-standard tuning guitars to his arsenal as well as an analog synthesizer. Jon has also experimented with using a sampler during several improvisations. Abram has experimented with using loops to create layered bass parts. Paraffin Section recorded several reels worth of improvisations at their rehearsal space in August 2008.
These are currently being edited and added to with the goal of releasing an album. The band has likened the process to the one used by Can on albums such as Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi. Jon Glancy has released solo recordings under the names Static Progression and John T. Montgomery's Bermuda. He has also performed with Degan (of Fetish Chicken) in the Sovereign Nations of Old Constantinople (aka The S.N.O.O.C.), Woulvercorn and A Bit Much as well as performed on Degan's solo recordings.
Abram has also played drums in Abernathy, bass in the Slurred Murrays and currently plays several instruments in Pyotr, drums for an as-yet-named Pyotr spin-off group and bass in the Musical Theatre.
