As opposed to Papaskew's earlier pop-based sound, the most recent incarnation of the band is more funky and danceable than it has ever been, and includes improvisation more than it ever has. Papaskew's style of playing is highly varied. The band will slide between smooth lounge jazz and grimy alt-rock, complex progressive compositions and simple soulful harmonies, straightforward folk-based songwriting and DJ-influenced grooves. Taken in all at once, a full breadth of Papaskew's work covers much of the modern musical landscape. Papaskew's sound blends its members affinity for classic rock and soulful melody with a collaborative approach to composition and the sense of musical adventure found in the jamband community.
The music itself involves a great deal of instrumental interplay, melodic harmonies, and vintage tone. Improvisation is also an important ingredient in Papaskew's music, although the improvisation rarely departs from existing song structures. Unlike many contemporary rock bands, Papaskew's music utilizes a sophisticated understanding of music theory more often found in other genres. As a result of such technical demands, Papaskew's sound is more refined than what many would consider to be the standard contemporary rock sound. Before forming Papaskew, David, Jeff, Derek, and Phil all played and recorded in various bands and music ensembles ranging from jazz combos to pop rock outfits, classic rock bands to hip hop rhythm sections.
The band, collectively, has years of gigging experience under their belts at many professional levels as well as recording experience in the studio. Although the band has yet to make itself known in San Francisco, Papaskew is well prepared and poised to make an indelible impression on the Bay Area's music scene in the very near future.
