Ninety9

Ninety9 is a much loved, but hardly prolific, all male pop band from Canberra, Australia. Ninety9 comprises of four members - Dirty Dez (Dereck Jones), Marky Boii (Mark Bradley), Big Balls Boc (Brendon O'Connor) and Cunning Linguist Crowie (Anthony Crowe, who also performs as DJ Miss Universe). The band was named after adding all four members ages together when they first decided on the project, and though two years later they should techinically call themselves 107, Ninety9 the brand has stuck. Their first single "Are You Ready?" was met with both critical and commercial success, despite its crude content and sexually violent overtones. Warmly regarded by many of those in Canberra, it was only due to immense public demand that they reformed in 2006 to reprise and possibly top their debut effort. On Saturday, the 19th of November 2006, an only moderadely prepared public was delivered "Hot Steamy Love", a Neptunes meets Trentemoller meets Rick Rubin with a hint of Stock, Aitken and Watermen pop track that realised the potential that "Are You Ready?" had laid the foundation for.

Whilst critical reaction at first was mixed, in the time since then it has reached the anuls of history - an unprecedented number of MySpace downloads for a track of its ilk, support from essentially every important and cutting edge dj in Australia, and rumours of impending US and UK promotional tours. "Hot Steamy Love' features new roles for many of the band - Derrick no longer raps, and Crowie has lost the vocoder, whilst Marky seems to have picked it up. The song has caused controvery amongst right wing groups for its lurid lyrics, especially when played backwards, however its the songs effect on women that has had the biggest impact on the community, and one that undoubtably will be felt for years to come.
