Matt Death and the New Intellectuals was a short-lived project led by Matt Wignall, former lead singer of Havalina Rail Co. Following Havalina's dissolution in 2005, Wignall announced the new project by posting tracks on their MySpace page. These songs came from sessions for an unfinished Havalina record entitled Pacific and were then intended for what would have been Matt Death's proper debut Death on Pacific. Since then, while stationed in his hometown of Long Beach, Wignall has pursued other interests including photography, artwork design, and record production from his home studio Tackyland.
