When Reynart heard Bruin, tho went he inward into his hole. For Maleperduys was full of holes, here one hole and there another, and yonder another, narrow, crooked and long, with many ways to go out, which he opened and shut after that he had need. When he had any prey brought home, or that he wist that any sought him for his misdeeds and trespasses, then he ran and hid him from his enemies into his secret chambers, that they could not find him; by which he deceived many a beast that sought him.” The Historye of Reynart the Foxe, trans. Morley The music is improvised in sessions of variable length. The sessions are later cut into “songs” based on natural pauses that occur during the improv as well as thematic continuity and changes. No other edits are made, nor are they possible, since the sessions are recorded to a single stereo track for all instruments due to the limits of our equipment. Malperduys was founded by Keith Rudolph (saw, keys, samples, electronics, autoharp, voice) and Derek Martin (guitar, keys, bass, harmonica, analog and digital electronics, berimbau, percussion, voice, throat-singing) in NYC in March 2008. The sessions were recorded at the Last Resort Art Space in Astoria, Queens.
Other musicians and artistic collaborators joined the band for various sessions, including: Drew Adler (drums), Ryan Monahan (bass), John (bass), Rob Bohn (visual art and direction) & Mike Yednak (saxophone). Vocalist Marcus Yi was a long-term member of the band appearing on most sessions recorded from late October 2009 until July 2010, when the group recorded its final session. Read more on Last.fm.
