Raised in Surrey as part of an old Gypsy family Smith served in the Second World War before returning to the travelling life of working a variety of jobs, mostly manual and seasonal in nature. A noted singer amongst his people, Smith was recorded by Dr Reg Hall and included as part of his Voice of the People series of field recording albums.
