Kat Devlin

With its combination of percussive guitar, deeply personal lyrics, tinged with an abiding idealism, and angelic vocals, Kat Devlin's musical style and stage presence might best be described as "dyke ingénue." With its combination of percussive guitar, deeply personal lyrics, tinged with an abiding idealism, and angelic vocals, Kat Devlin's musical style and stage presence might best be described as "dyke ingénue." Like a Hammersteinian teenager on a rural porch swing, Devlin's songs return again and again to the theme of love—though never in the same way twice. Her "Touch of a Girl [Gay]," a folk-pop number that leads audiences of all sexual orientations to sing out gladly, "I thank you…for making me gay," ruminates without sentimentality upon a love lost on a journey won; "Good Fuck" (composed with lyricist-girlfriend Shannon Brennan) argues against W.H. Auden as it attests to the epiphanic value of great sex; "Running," a song of haunting lyricism and captivating anaphora, relates the story of a faithful lover with a hero complex. Of course, the Minnesota-born singer songwriter is not afraid to stray from that theme, as tunes like the philosophically explorative "Slowness," and searching and reflective "Bound" will attest—but it is not her thematic range that keeps fans coming back. Devlin's pitch-perfect vocals touch the listener with varying and sumptuous tones that echo both the pure-folk of Dar Williams and Emmylou Harris, and the pop-folk-rock of Ani DiFranco, Neko Case, and Jenny Lewis. Whether alone, or with expert percussionist Josh Giunta and soulfully sweet back-up vocalist Stephanie Chan (appearing with Devlin occasionally as "And Friends"), Kat Devlin melodically takes her listeners to a place of wine and supper, Sundays and late-night sessions of angst—and, closing our eyes, we nod and love every beat of it.
