Karl Nyhlin is one of the leading lute players of Scandinavia. With a repertoire covering a wide range of plucked instruments from the renaissance through to the romantic era, he is much in demand internationally both as a soloist and ensemble musician. Karl Nyhlin (1974, Umeå, northern Sweden) began his musical studies at an early age, receiving tuition in both his home town and in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he also spent time throughout his childhood years. After initial studies on violin, cello, and electric guitar, Karl studied the lute in Stockholm, followed by postgraduate studies in Malmö. He was subsequently awarded several major scholarships, including a Fulbright, to travel to America and work with Nigel North at Bloomington, Indiana, where he completed his studies in 2002. Today, Karl is in great demand across Europe, as both a soloist and continuo player on various lutes, theorbos and early guitars. He has performed in over 30 countries, and holds the position of principal lute of The Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra, REBaroque (formerly Stockholm Baroque Orchestra), The New Dutch Academy and Nordic Affect (Iceland). He works regularly in numerous chamber music groups and projects, for example award-winning Latin American-baroque specialists Ensemble Villancico, and in close collaboration with singers, such as soprano Susanne Rydén and countertenor Mikael Bellini. He is represented on numerous recordings as an orchestral and chamber musician. His critically acclaimed 2010 debut solo CD of works by baroque lute composers Weiss and Kellner is followed up by a new solo CD of Jacobean lute music, to be released in February 2012, also on dB Productions. Karl is a committed teacher and has given masterclasses, workshops and lecture-recitals at music institutions throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia, most recently at the invitation of the conservatoria of The Hague, Halle and Sydney. In his home city of Stockholm, he teaches lute and chamber music at the newly established early music department at the Kulturama Conservatorium. Read more on Last.fm.
