Julie Atherton was born in Preston, Lancashire. She was quite a shy girl, and her family never expected her to persuit a career in Acting or Theatre. Julie later shocked them and proved them wrong when she finally admitted she would love to be involved in theatre, and asked her Mum to join a Drama School. Julie later attended Mountview Academy Of Theatre Arts in London where she went on to graduate and starred in many leading roles These include: Original London Kate Monster/Lucy The Slut in Avenue Q (Noel Coward Theatre, Gielgud Theatre), Sophie in Mamma Mia (Prince Edward Theatre), Serena Katz in Fame (both on tour and in the West End Aldwych Theatre), Minerva in Out Of This World, Fern in Charlottes Web. Iris Bentley in Let Him Have Justice (Covent Garden Festival). She also appeared in Inkle and Yarico at the Edinburgh Festival and is a founded member of the 'Notes From New York' series.

Performances with them include Cathy in The Last Five Years, Jonathan Larson's Tick, Tick... Boom!, Christmas in New York. She has just completed recording her new Album 'A Girl Of Few Words' (the works of Charles Miller), which can be purchased from Dress Circle, iTunes, Amazon, CD baby, and more. Julie is currently playing the lead role of Kate Monster and the role of Lucy the Slut in the Tony Award Winning Broardway Musical 'Avenue Q' which is showing in the West End, London, at the Gielgud Theatre. Julie was the original Kate/Lucy in the London production (Noel Coward Theatre), leaving in December 2007. She resumed the role a year later in December 2008, and is continuing this role in June 2009, following Avenue Q's move to the Gielgud Theatre.
