Instant feedback, close contact with your public, work hard or starve. These were the seventies, the sun always shone, and he was going to have fun. He didn't speak a word of any other language but that was not a problem. He traveled from north to south, east to west; he visited and played in just about every large city in Western Europe and hundreds of smaller towns. The money wasn't great, but it was “always enough to pay for a meal, a room for the night, and a train to the next place”.
The next place was usually decided by which train was leaving next. He lived in France for about ten years, Spain for about three years and he’s now back in Germany not that far from where it all started. He still plays the street most weeks; “it keeps me in contact with the normal people”. John has played and sung at quite a few Charity events over these last few years, “a time to put back in a little of what I’ve taken out”. He also gives singing and guitar lessons, He says that he can’t make you play like Segovia or Clapton but he can help you play for fun and what he’s learnt about singing over the years is more than most people will ever need. John has also gone back to Engineering in a way, he worked in an Architects office for about three years here in Germany as a draftsman and he now does freelance work ranging from Site development to Interior design to normal house plans.
For those of you who are interested, he works with CAD and Corel he says that he always found the computer interesting and what he wasn’t able to achieve as a kid he finds quite easy today. John has one other project he’s devoting a lot of time to these days, last year he took over as Chairman of The Business Network Germany (TBNG) this is an English language forum for business people and here he’s able to help people to make contacts with other business people in a friendly ambience. His CD “Streets Apart” has on the cover the business man and the Hippy shaking hands, both of those people are John and he tries through this club to break down some of the barriers that exist between the two sides. As a musician he knows that sometimes he needs the help of the businessman and as the businessman he knows that sometimes he will need the Artist. Bringing the two together is what he’s trying to do here.
Check it out. Over these years John has sung and played in the street, in bars and clubs, at private parties, charity functions and the odd radio and TV spot. “Its great making people happy and I know now that this is what I do when I sing. As long as I am able, I will sing and I hope to continue to make people happy”. This is John Spendelow, Singer / Songwriter, Draftsman / engineer and Businessman. Read more on Last.fm.
