He is the founder of the Oakland, CA-based band John Payne and The Hurt. 3) John Payne is an American saxophonist/clarinetist/flutist who has recorded with Van Morrison on “Astral Weeks”, Bonnie Raitt on “Give It Up” (for which he was nominated as best clarinetist by the Playboy Jazz Poll), Peter C.

Johnson and Noel Stookey (of Peter Paul and Mary). In the 1960's he formed Manic Depressives, together with Peter C. Johnson and Paul Rishell. John has put out three albums under his own name on Arista and Mercury records.
