John Clark McCall

John Clark McCall, a native of Vidalia, Georgia, got his first taste of the theatre organ through the recordings of George Wright—arguably the greatest theatre organist of them all. John Clark McCall, a native of Vidalia, Georgia, got his first taste of the theatre organ through the recordings of George Wright—arguably the greatest theatre organist of them all. By the time his family relocated in Moultrie in 1960, he had an extensive library of theatre organ recordings and was hopelessly “hooked”. Early sightings of silenced organs in Georgia’s Albany and Fox theatres heightened his interest in movie palaces and their musical soul. In 1969, he finally heard his first theatre pipe organ at the Atlanta Fox with Bob Van Camp at the console.

He promptly joined the American Theatre Organ Society and the Atlanta Chapter for which he served as president for two years. In October, 2010, he was awarded the Atlanta Chapter ATOS Lifetime Achievement Award following his solo concert at the Rylander Theatre Moller, in Americus, GA. In 2002, McCall was named winner of the American Theatre Organ Society’s Hobbyist Competition, accepting the award at the national convention in San Diego, California. He served as co-chairman for the Atlanta Fabulous Fox Organ Weekend, May 28-30, 2004 and was interviewed in the Georgia Public Broadcasting video production celebrating the Atlanta Fox's 75th Anniversary. McCall has released several theatre organ recordings including "A Paramount Idea" , "A Capitol Idea," and "Alabama Album: John McCall Live at the Alabama Wurlitzer" of which all were reviewed favorably in "Theatre Organ." In February 2008, he played for the screening of "Man From Plains" at the Rylander Theatre in Americus, Georgia, which which was attended by former President Jimmy Carter and his First Lady, Rosalynn. McCall has also played engagements at the Masters Tournament in Augusta, GA, for Mickey Rooney at the Rylander Theatre, and for organ inagural concerts at the Athens Theatre, DeLand, FL and the Capitol Theatre, Macon, GA.

McCall has appeared eight times in concert at the Alabama Theatre, Birmingham, AL and the Forker Memorial Wurlitzer at Grace Baptist Church, Sarasota and in numerous other theatre organ venues in the United States.
