João Do Morro is the artistic name of João Pereira da Silva Júnior, a singer and composer of swingueira from Recife, northeast Brazil. João Do Morro is well known for his catchy upbeat rhythms, pleasant voice, and smart and often hilarious lyrics. He is also known for adopting an innovative and successful marketing strategy whereby he allows--even encourages--street vendors to sell illegal copies of his songs in order to gain popularity and attract ever more fans to his live performances, where he makes money. "Balaiagem" is a good example of his honest humor.

The song lists about every hair product women use to straighten their hair (predominantly curly in the mostly mixed race northeast), with a chorus "Lá vem a chuuuuva" (Here comes the rain) describing the stampedes in his gigs when it rains and women run for cover to protect their hairdos. In another, "3 segundos", he complains that everyone has a cellphone (which in Brazil runs mostly on pay-as-you-go plans) but nobody wants to pay for calls, either calling collect or pointlessly struggling to pull off 3-second phone conversations before being cut off. In the more controversial "Papar Frango", he talks about a supposedly heterosexual man who claims to maintain a homosexual affair just so he can get nice gifts from his lover. He is considered by many to be a notable exception in a genre of samba originating from Bahia (swingueira) that is most often characterized by poorly written, poorly produced, and poorly arranged songs as well as dull-witted, hyper-sexualized lyrics.
