His sound is partly influenced by Folk Punk artists like Al Baker and Frank Turner, as well as contemporary Scottish indie pop groups like The Vaselines, The Pearlfishers and Arab Strap. Richards began writing music seriously in 2005, at which time he was a member of Glaswegian Grunge-Rock act Stacked Actors, until a move to Ayr in September 2007 forced him to leave the band in December of that year. The band decided to carry on, using most of the songs written for the band by Richards, using the new name Junk Yard Shift. Occasionally, Richards can be seen sharing stages and living rooms at house parties around the Glasgow area with artists such as Phil Anderson, Dave Hughes, A Still Frame Skyline and Al Baker. His proposed backing band, The Bandicoots, will likely consist of members from other local bands, including Medusa's Curse, A Still Frame Skyline and The Biatches.
