Jim Dead is a singer/songwriter who is influenced as much by the Golden Age of travelling Medicine Shows and Carnivals as he is by the folk, country and rock music traditions. With an interest in the evolution of mid-west American culture, Jim’s music tells the stories of the various characters that inhabit an elusive town called Deadsville. A native of Glasgow, Jim started his musical journey playing in a succession of local rock bands with friends before exploring the solo route, writing simple songs which he recorded on a “busted up tape recorder”. Many of Jim’s songs spin tales of despair, hope and redemption, which have earned him comparisons to the likes of Neil Young, Johnny Cash and “Hank Williams backed by Creedence Clearwater Revival” often placing him in the Americana genre. Jim has released two albums – 2009’s Go Tell the Congregation and 2011’s Ten Fires. Go Tell The Congregation was recorded with the help of friend and old band mate, Stuart Begley, on 6 of its songs. It’s a sparse, hushed collection of that is precisely what you expect from the artwork. Sepia toned. His most recent album, Ten Fires, is a strong collection of dusty, often twisted, allegories.

The album is a strange mix of character sketches and ramblings. Here Dead is backed by The Doubters on a few of the tracks. The band compliment Dead’s minimalist approach to song writing and never threaten to over power. They electrify his musings and Jim valued the fuller musical landscape the band created for his characters to roam. As well as the album launch to promote Ten Fires, Jim has made a number of prominent live appearances at various established nights in Glasgow (including That Devil Music and the Vagabond Social Club), supported Lou Vargo and Chris Pureka (both from the US) and featured on the bill at the Glasgow Americana Festival. Americana-UK, Nine Bullets, Beat-Surrender and Blabber ‘n’ Smoke have all been very positive about his music and as well as continuing to promote his latest release through 2012 Jim is planning a tour in the second half of the year. Jim lives with his wife. They have no pets. Read more on Last.fm.
