James E. Cunningham Ph.D. is an ethnomusicologist and assistant professor in the Department of Music at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. He began playing the didgeridoo in 1989 as a student of world-renowned trombonist Stuart Dempster. Didgeridoo.diversions is the first solo album for James E. Cunningham. It consists of original experimental compositions/arrangements for solo didgeridoo, as well as duets for didgeridoo with saxophones, double bass, and the sounds of nature.

Many of the tracks employ a melodic approach to an instrument often considered to produce only a drone or rhythmic accompaniment.
