The band’s long-anticipated debut CD Sun Place brilliantly displays their cutting-edge approach to culturally diverse music. The group was founded by composer, music therapist and musicologist Aaron Lightstone (guitar, oud, saz and synthesizer), who is fascinated by the convergence that occurs in a multi-cultural diaspora. The passionate and multi-lingual lead singer Aviva Chernick is a dynamic and in-demand vocalist. Also a Cantorial soloist, Chernick has performed and worked with jazz and world music greats such as Tania Gill, Andrew Downing, Mitch Smolkin, Klezmer Buenos Aires, Levon Ichkahanian, Ernie Tollar and George Sawa. Chris Gartner (bass, and producer of the CD) has worked with members of Barenaked Ladies, The Band and many favorite Canadian artists including: Look People, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Lori Cullen and Chantal Kreviazuk.
As a member of the celebrated world music group TASA, he has performed with Indian masters Trichy Sankaran, Steve Oda and Dhruva Ghosh. Other members of the group include Sundar Viswanathan (saxophone, flute), who is a tenured professor of jazz performance at York University and has performed/recorded around the world with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Al Martino, the Grammy-nominated Charles Tolliver Big Band, Bobby Vinton, Kiran Aluwalia, and Autorickshaw. Jeff Wilson (drums, Arabic, and Latin percussion), is an accomplished performer in many genres. He is a regular percussionist with many local favourites such as Maza Mezé, David Buchbinder, and Sultans of String. Guest artists on the CD include Egyptian quanun master Dr.
