Jürg Itten (1974) works in the field of Psychiatry and as a composer. He took private lessons in Double Bass (with Giorgos Antoniou and Benjamin Fay), in Music Theory (with Beatrix Hauri and Chrigu Gerber) and in North Indian Classical Music (with Peter Klatt). In 2009 he started furthering his studies with the pianist Jürg Rickli. Jürg Itten’s works are based on the consistent reduction of the material he uses, and also on means of repetition, so the listener is gradually led to the center of the musical structure.

Jürg Itten prefers to work with symmetries, which seem to be transparent, but are nevertheless easily recognizable. He analyzes different grades of interweaving that are often influenced by rhythmic superpositions, and selectively introduces them. A central point in his compositions is the Double Bass, with which sound possibilities are extended by special techniques. For instance he uses chords that are built of notes that are plucked above and below the left hand, and preparations. Some of Jürg Itten’s music offers room for improvisation, while all his music allows project-oriented electronic or acoustic adaptation. The works are influenced by Minimal Music, New Lyrism, North Indian Classical Music and Contemporary Jazz.

He also preserves sound ideas in the analysis of atonal music. Jürg Itten has worked with the clarinetist, composer and producer Don Li since 2007, and has developed his own personal interpretation of the tonus-music concept. In the scope of planning and coordinate projects he works constantly with the Bass player Simone Schranz. Read more on Last.fm.
