Matsushita studied from 1973 to 1977 composition by Hiroaki Minami of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music ( Japanese :东京艺术大学Tōkyō Daigaku Gei-jutsu), now: Tokyo University of the Arts . Matsushita studied from 1973 to 1977 composition by Hiroaki Minami of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music ( Japanese :东京艺术大学Tōkyō Daigaku Gei-jutsu), now: Tokyo University of the Arts. At the same university he then studied with Toshiro Mayuzumi to 1979. Then he exchanged with a scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch-Dienst (DAAD) at the University of Arts in Berlin , then: Hochschule für Musik Berlin called, and studied with Isang Yun until 1986. One of the other students when it was later Taiwanese composer Pan Hwang-long (潒皍龅). As a conductor he was from 1982 to 1986 associated with the Ensemble Kochi (East Wind) in Berlin and from 1999 in Tokyo.

Since 1990 he has been conductor of the Camerata Nagano and 1993 of the Bunkyo Civic Orchestra in Tokyo. He is also a guest conductor with several orchestras in Germany and Japan. Matsushita is since 1987 professor for composition at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Since 2003 he is also a professor of contemporary Asian music associated with the Performing Arts Center. He was a guest lecturer at several universities and conservatories in the United States , such as University of California - Berkeley , Colgate University in Hamilton and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , the institute Centro Ricerche Musicali (CRM) in Rome , in South Korea at the Seoul National University (SNU), the Yonsei University , the Dankook University in Yongin , the University of Suwon in Hwaseong , the Hanyang University in Seoul , the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei , at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music ( YSTCM) (杨秀桃音乐学院) in Singapore and at the Central Music Conservatory (Chinese:请参考校园黄页) in Beijing . As a composer, he was awarded many national and international awards, including in 1976 the 3rd prize "Mainichi Music Composition Competition" for his orchestral work Diffusion, the 1st prize at the composition competition in Mönchengladbach in 1985 for his work Toki-no-ito 1 - Threads of Time, the Irino Prize in 1986 for Toki-no-ito 2 for piano and orchestra.

His works are also performed in addition to all parts of the world, such as America , Australia , Asia and Europe. For Matsushita it was a special honor, that of his works during the 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan Nagano were performed. He was as a composer working trampled at international festivals such as the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in 1982, the "World Music Days" of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in 1982 in the Austrian Graz in 1988 in Hong Kong and in 1993 in Mexico City , at the "Festival Horizonte Berlin '85", the "European Music Days Copenhagen '85" and "Invention Festival Berlin '86".
