Formed in Montgomery, Alabama in the summer of 2010, Ideas of the Opposite is a progressive metal band with influences ranging from fusion to experimental/avant-garde death metal to post-rock and shoegaze. Their band name was taken from a recurring phrase in Thomas Pynchon's, Gravity's Rainbow. Released in October, Evolva delves into the band's progressive influences. The first track, "Transmogrification," takes the listener on a dystopian journey through the desperation of modern man, compounded by an array of dissonant harmony and unrelenting drumwork. The track's contemporary metal sound is often juxtaposed by fading moments of clean channel guitar work and "sing-a-long" harmonies.

"Aberrations" explores IOTO's more subtle side, referencing aspects of classical guitar with "loud-soft" dynamic build-ups and a plythera of effects. Heavily influenced by Cynic and its off-shoot Exivious, "Evolva" combines the brutality of "Transmogrification" with characteristics of fusion virtuosity and advanced modal harmony, accompanied by cycling song structures reminiscent of 70s progressive rock bands like King Crimson and Camel. "Of, Ideas" brings a subtler soundscape, once again reminiscent of contemporary progressive acts like Animals as Leaders and Scale the Summit. "Originis Ascend" returns to a contemporary metal setting, this time exploring more technical drumming with "stop-starty" time signatures and Tosin Abasi-like tap riffing.

Ending on a melodic theme from "Of, Ideas," Evolva fades out to recurring melody that ironically juxtaposes the band's brutality. In November 2011, Ideas of the Opposites is preparing for live shows early next year as well as material for Evolva's follow-up. Read more on Last.fm.
