Le Concert Spirituel was the first company to perform private concerts in France. Founded in the eighteenth century, it closed with the outbreak of French Revolution. Its name was revived by Hervé Niquet when he founded his ensemble of ancient instruments in 1987, bringing back to life the great French repertoire played at the court of Versailles. In this spirit, Le Concert Spirituel collaborates closely with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles and is devoted to airing the works of the great composers of French musical heritage, from Charpentier to Lully, by way of Campra or Boismortier.

Expanding its repertoire to Italian, English and other masters, Le Concert Spirituel has made a name for itself on the national and international stage as one of the authoritative ensembles for the interpretation of Baroque music. It performs regularly at the Salle Pleyel, or at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, and also makes international tours in concert halls as prestigious as the Barbican Centre of London, the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam and the Opera City concert Hall of Tokyo. Hervé Niquet is proud to assemble an orchestra of keen musicians who interpret music, make instruments and conduct historical research. This dynamic confederation makes a "team ethic" which enables the realization of projects that are on the cutting edge of the latest discoveries in interpretation and the sound of period instruments: the production Fireworks & Watermusic, whose recording received the Edison Award, is typical of this work.

This constant research has led to an identifiable "sound" for the ensemble, recognizable on first hearing. It plays off of the harshness and the grain of the instruments to create a purely Baroque music whose listener is never bored. While Le Concert Spirituel specializes in French sacred music and is recognized the world over for its work on this repertoire, an important part of its activity is also devoted to lyrical music. Numerous operas have been interpreted by the ensemble such as Boismortier's Daphnis et Chloé, Rameau's Pigmalion, Mozart's Don Giovanni and Purcell's King Arthur.

The ensemble also devotes a large part of its time to rediscovering forgotten lyrical works of the French repertory such as Destouches's Callirhoé, Lully's Proserpine, Marais's Sémélé (voted « Opera Recording of the Year » by the ECHO Klassik Awards 2009), and finally Grétry's Andromaque. These musical adventures were also the opportunity to work with directors and choreographers as diverse and varied as Gilles and Corinne Benizio (alias Shirley & Dino), Jean-Paul Scarpitta, Karole Armitage, and Georges Lavaudant. This process involving French operas has given birth to a collection of book-CD's in collaboration with the label Glossa (distributed by Harmonia Mundi), with whom le Concert Spirituel has an exclusive recording engagement since 2000. Generally speaking, over the past twenty years, Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel have developed a major series of recordings: fifty CD's have been recorded since the inception of the ensemble and numerous of them have received high critical acclaim from both local and international press. Le Concert Spirituel in residence at the Opéra National de Montpellier is funded by the DRAC Languedoc-Roussillon/Ministry for the Arts, the town and the region of Montpellier and the city of Paris. Le Concert Spirituel is also funded by the Fondation BNP Paribas and the Fondation Bru.
