Hand Hell are Kirsty Stegwazi (guitar/vocals), René Schaefer (guitar and bass) and Ricky French (Drums), an independent rock trio from Melbourne, Australia. Hand Hell released their debut album Phonography in 2007. After four years of playing under the moniker The Bites, with a variety of different line-ups, Melbourne songwriters Kirsty Stegwazi and René Schaefer decided it was time to make a fresh start to allow for an expanded musical palette and a fresh approach to writing and recording. While still retaining the rock elements of The Bites’ sound, HAND HELL also draws on Kirsty and René’s love of experimental pop sounds and a variety of moods informed by their own eclectic musical careers. (Apart from having been a renowned solo artist, Kirsty’s CV of collaborations reads like a who’s who of Australian and international alternative music, encompassing the likes of Magic Dirt, Art Of Fighting, Paul Kelly, Archer Prewitt, Alastair Galbraith and many more…) To celebrate this new freedom, Kirsty and René decided to record HAND HELL’s debut album ‘Phonography’ in a very different way to their previous releases. Engineer Keith Urquhart set up a mobile recording studio in a converted warehouse and songs were developed in a very relaxed and spontaneous manner. This involved inviting drummer Jen Tait of Go Genre Everything to bring her rhythmic ideas to the basic structures and for various other guests to contribute parts. Keith, Kirsty and René then edited and mixed the results, adding, subtracting and generally messing around with sounds to create a cohesive whole. ‘Phonography’ was released on HAND HELL’s own record label Dusky Sounds in October 2007. In keeping with previous Dusky Sounds releases, the album is packaged in hand-crafted, screen-printed, half cloth bound covers, that make this CD yet another unique and highly collectable release from this record company. Since recording ‘Phonography’, Kirsty and René have gained a permanent drummer and soul-mate in NZ ex-pat Ricky French (A guitarist and songwriter in his own right with Actor/Model), who brings yet another dimension to the band’s sound, keeping HAND HELL an ever-evolving project. Recently the band recorded two new songs for a limited edition giveaway CD ‘Four by Four’, on which HAND HELL share space with three local bands who share an affinity for scuzzy pop tones and energetic live shows.

Needless to say, all the copies were snapped up at the launch at The Old Bar.
